1. In this experiment it was, in the first place, ascertained, as had been expected, that the elongation of the root of Vicia Faba-seed-lings, cultivated in culture solution, was remarkably influenced by the degree of the oxygen supply.2. We were able to make sure that the degree of the elongation of root, which was increased when the oxygen supply was rieh and decreased when no oxygen was supplied, was accompanied by the increase and the decrease of the frequency of cell division respectively.3. It was also seen that the elongation of individual cells likewise varied with the elongation of the root.4. Though the degree of the elongation of the root differs with both the frequency of division and the elongation of individual cells, the former may likely have more important effect upon it, in this Gase, than the latter.
