This paper estimates the CO<SUB>2</SUB> emission and the cost of introducing Japanese advanced technology to the coal thermal-power-generation sector in China, using a newly developed technology choice model. The model calculates costs and CO<SUB>2</SUB> emission by the development of coal power plants as well as replacement and repair of existing power plants, taking into account socio-economic future scenarios in China. Timing of the introduction and regional differences in China are also considered in the model. As a result, we found that introducing the technology would reduce CO<SUB>2</SUB> emission by 16% in total by the year of 2050 and the delay of the introduction may cause decrease in the CO<SUB>2</SUB> reduction amount and increase in cost.
