As shown in Fig. 1, this torque-meter consists of a pair of toothed steel wheels and magnetic pick-ups, and the formers are rigidly attached to both ends of the drive shaft, the latters which remain fixed in space are associated with each wheel. The revolution of the shaft induces alternate e.m.f. in the coil of each pick-up. The two kinds of e.m.f. are different in phase depending upon the relative tooth positions of the two combinations of wheel and pick-up. The phase difference, giving a measure of transmitted torque, is measured by an electronic phase comparator. The error for measuring the torque is ±0.5% at full scale.
