In order to detect the rolling contact fatigue damage, the changes of the diffraction linewidth within the surface layer of the roll sleeve served for cold strip mill has been investigatedby X-ray back reflection method. The results are as follows;
(1) The fiber texture exists within the surface Iayer of about 60μ thickness. And, some upsand downs appear in the distribution curve of values of diffraction line width within the rangeof about 4mm depth from the surface.
(2) On the occasion of giving a dressing on sleeve surface, if the thickness which is removedby each dressing was smaller than the thickness of range which is occupied by rolling contactfatigue damage, the becoming shallow of the depth of maximum damage follows in consequenceof the accumulation of damage.
(3) The shape of the distribution curve of values of diffraction line width is phenomeno-logically understood as the results of the composition of each contribution due to fiber texture, accumulated fatigue damage and original crystal structure of this material.
(4) The X-ray back reflection method applied to the surface during the successive etchingmay be utilized as semi-non-destructive detection of the rolling contact fatigue damage withinthe surface layer of roll sleeve.
