A new long box type olfactometer made of plastic was devised to evaluate the attractancy of rice grains to the rice weevil, Sitophilus zeamais. A sample to be tested was placed at one end of the box, and 100 weevils were released from the other end. Purified air was passed from the sample side to the weevils, and the weevils were allowed to crawl to the attractive sample. Integrated distance (distance×number of insects) was adapted as a parameter in the evaluation of attractancy. Both sexes showed similar response to the attractant. Antennectomized weevils could not respond to the attractant. Acidic and neutral fractions from rice, wheat and corn grains were equally attractive to the weevils.
