When virgin females of Anopheles balabacensis were kept in a screen cage with a mouse as blood-source for 24 hr, over 90% of them fed blood on the 5th day after emergence. In insemination, however, it was enough on the 3rd day of emergence by free-mating in a screen cage, and even within 24 hr of emergence by artificial-mating, respectively. It was clearly shown that female mating ability develops earlier than the blood-feeding ability. Actually, mating was observed to occur before blood-feeding when the both sexes were released in the same cage with a mouse. Female flight activity has two peaks occurring synchronously with light-on (morning) and-off (evening), and was at maximum in the first hour of each stage. Further, the flight activity to a blood-source of virgin females was found to greatly differ from that of mated females. The former was little attracted to a blood-source, although the latter was attracted after only 20 min during the first hour of scotophase, which is the most active stage. This result suggested that insemination induces the active biting behavior of females.
