Metastatic carcinomas to the limb muscles are extremely rare. We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung with metastasis to the right vastus lateralis muscle
A 63-year-old male receiving antituberculous agents for pulmonary tuberculosis complained of left chest pain. Chest x-ray revealed osteolysis on the left 6th and 7th ribs. A diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung was made by percutaneous needle aspiration cytology. Eight months after radiation and chemotherapy tumor was found in the right thigh muscle. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a solitary tumor localized in the right vastus lateralis muscle and open biopsy proved it to be a metastatic tumor of the pulmonary carcinoma.
Since an increasing number of carcinoma cases with muscle metastasis have been reported, detailed examinations and treatment for such metastases are necessary. MRI is useful for detecting metastatic carcinoma in the limb muscles.
