Two cases of radiologically occult cancer of the peripheral lung are presented. Case 1 was a 60-year-old man. Conventional plain chest X-ray film was negative, but a nodule in the right lung S2b was found by CT (computed tomography). The diagnosis of adenocarcinoma was confirmed by transbronchial lung biopsy. The patient was operated upon for stage I lung cancer (size: 1.5×1.4cm). Case 2 was a 66-year-old female. Examinations including plain chest x-ray film, tomogram and CT were noncontributory to the localization of the tumor. Sputum cytology was positive for adenocarcinoma. Although the tumor was bronchoscopically invisible, a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma was made by brushing through B8b. Postoperative stage was III A (size: 1.3×2.6cm). The features of plain chest X-ray film and other imaging methods for the detection of lung cancer were commented on.
