A case of immature teratoma of the testicle showing benign transformation of lung metastatic tumors.

Recently, there have been increased reports of the phenomenon in which immature teratoma of the testicle shows benign transformation after metastasizing to the lung. However there are not so many reports in Japan. We encountered a case of a 23 year-old man who underwent right inguinal orchiectomy for immature teratoma of the testicle on September 14, 1981.Two years after the operation, we resected bilateral metastatic lung nodules (right;S4b, left;S3b) simultaneously with median sternotomy on September 13, 1983, after treatment with the combination chemotherapy (VP-16, Vinblastine, Bleomycin, C-DDP). The histopathological study of the resected lung tumors thoroughly revealed the features of benign teratoma, and no metastatic involvement was found in the mediastinal lymph node. The findings strongly suggested benign transformation of the metastatic lung tumors by the therapy. We discuss the clinicopathological features of this tumor, especially concerning the relationship of benign transformation with adjuvant therapy, and also the importance of histopathological studies in such metastatic lung tumors.
