A 73 year-old male complained of right side chest pain. The chest roentogenogram showed complete atelectasis of the right lung. He developed gradually recurrent attacks of diarrhea and teleangiectasia and flushing of the face. As his symptoms suggested carcinoid syndrome his serum serotonin, serum NSE and urine 5-HIAA were measured and we found them to be much higher than normal. At bronchofiberscopy a polypoid tumor was found at the orifice of the right main bronchus. The biopsy specimen showed histopathologic features of bronchial carcinoid tumor. Grimelius staining of the autopsy specimen showed argyrophil granules in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells and electronmicroscopy showed many neurosecretory granules in the cytoplasm of the tumor cells. Serotonin was impregnated by immuno-peroxidasestaining using the ABC (avidn-biotin-peroxidase complex) method.
