Bronchofiberscopic polypectomy followed by tracheal resection and reconstruction.

A 42 year-old woman, who had been treated under a diagnosis of asthma for 6 years was admitted with acute dyspnea. She looked acutely ill. At bronchoscopy a number of nodules occluded 90% of the airway. One polypoid lesion was resected by bronchofiberscopic electrosungical polypectomy, resulting in relief from acute respiratory distress. Histologic diagnosis revealed an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea.<BR>Radical operation was performed, and eight cartilage rings of the trachea were removed, followed by primary reconstruction. She has returned to work and is in good condition. Anastomotic stenosis did not develop.
