The slope stability equations in the form of recursive relationships are derived for the variable interslice force inclination using the finite formulation proposed by Spencer. Their incorporation in a computational procedure makes the finite formulation of the solution strategy give results which agree quite well those obtained using the infinitesimal formulation of Morgenstern and Price. Necessary checks on the computed solution to a slope problem for its compliance with the assumptions made in the theory are discussed. These assumptions relate to the continuity of slide mass and the linearity of Mohr-Coulomb strength envelope. A sample problem is included to study the effects of interslice force inclination assumption on the computed solution for an embankment dam.
