The present studies are concerned with analyses of flow of slurry in a circular pipe. This first part of serial reports presents a theoretical analysis of laminar flow of Bingham plastic fluid in the entrance region of a circular pipe, by variational method.Ascertaining the theoretical results by experiments performed with alumina (about 2μ diameter) -water slurry, it is concluded that the length of the entrance region is shorter with Bingham plastic fluid than with Newtonian fluid. It is also seen that the correction factor, representing the effect of pressure drop in the entrance region on the pressure difference between the inlet and a given point downstream of the entrance region, is smaller than in the case of Newtonian fluid. These results are correlated with the specific radius of plug of the Bingham fluid flow.
