In 1986 the Osaki shellmound in Noda City, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, was excavated under the auspices of the Noda City Museum, and yielded faunal and cultural remains of the prehistoric Jomon period. Of these, fragments belonging to one horse metacarpus have received particular attention, which were recovered in association with other bone remains of mammals such as deer or wild boar from the shell-bearing bed deposited during the Horinouchi I to the Kasori B pottery phase of Late Jomon.Archaeological evidences seemed to suggest that ancient horses of Japan (immigrated from the Asian Continent?) came into appearance in the Holocene Jomon period. However, it casts some doubt on the previous archaeological records of horse remains of Jomon age that an increasing number in recent years of much controlled excavations on a large scale have nevertheless provided little or no additional records to them.As for the horse specimen from the Osaki shellmound, it was provisionally assigned to Late Jomon, since no difference in depositional contexts and in the degree of fossilization was observed macroscopically between the horse remains and the other associated mammalian remains. Hence, a relative dating approach by the fluorine analysis has been applied in this study to check the provisional age assignment. The results fail to support it, on the contrary show that the horse remains may have been intruded into the site after the shellmound of Jomon age had been constructed. Such intrusions of horse remains of younger ages have also been recognized with the aid of chemical or physical analysis in some other Jomon sites. Further chronological investigations are needed to clarify whether horses existed or not in the Jomon period in Japan.
