Somatometrical and somatoscopical studies were made on the present Sakhalin Ainu evacuated from Sakhalin to Hokkaido. The physical characteristics of the Sakhalin Ainu were compared with those of the Hokkaido native Ainu reported previously by the present authors, and the Japanese, who lived in Sakhalin Ainu village, some of whom were married to the Ainu and most of whom came from the northeast district of Japan. The obtained metrical values and indices are given in the original tables and figures. The results are as follows :1) Among the Ainu in general the present Sakhalin Ainu in both sexes had large facial and nasal height, which were typical traits of the native Sakhalin Ainu, but other original characteristics of head and face were not observable.2) Some of the bodily traits of the Sakhalin Ainu tended to resemble to those of the Hokkaido pure Ainu, however cephalic and facial traits resembled exceedingly to the Hokkaido mixed Ainu and considerably to the Northeast-Japanese.3) The Orokho and Gilyak aboriginal peoples in Sakhalin differed extremely from the Sakhalin Ainu.4) The present findings suggest that the Sakhalin Ainu may be closely mixed with the Japanese.
