The methods of image processing of plants were developed to obtain the information about the growth to be used in the computer system for the control of plant growth in practical cultivation: In present experiments, it became clear that the evaluation of the growth in population of cucumber plants was made possible by using a function of sum (<I>P</I>) of matrix elements of a digitized image taken together with 9 or more plants in an image at a fixed camera angle. Furthermore, it was made possible that the background of plant image in practical cultivation was eliminated by using infrared region (850-about 1100 nm) for sensing the image. By this method, the plant image was separated from the background enough to be used for the image processing in practical cultivation, and the mathematical model of growth was represented by the function of <I>P</I>. From these findings, this method for the image processing of plants was estimated to be usable for evaluation of the growth in practical cultivation such as that in a green house.
