Affecting Factors on the Outbreak of Tomato Virus Diseases in Greenhouse (I):Relationship between Symptom, Causal Viruses and Resistant Gene for Tobacco Mosaic Virus of Tomato Plant

To determine the causal viruses of tomato plants showing mosaic, fern leaf like and necrotic symptoms, 33 samples in greenhouses were collected in Shizuoka, Aichi and Kyoto prefectures. By the inoculation tests on a series of 4 indicator plants using carborundum, tomato strain of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV-T) was detected in 27 samples, cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) in 21 samples and ordinary strain of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV-O) in 13 samples. No potato virus X (PVX) was detected by agglutination reaction on slide with antiserum against PVX.<BR>The collections were divided on the basis of genotypes of tomato plants for resistance to tobacco mosaic virus into 7 groups, each group was studied on the relationship between symptom, causal viruses and genotype. The heterozygous plant having resistant gene, Tm-2<I><SUP>a</SUP></I> showed necrotic sympton and TMV-T and CMV were detected. The plant having resistant genes, Tm-1, Tm-2<I><SUP>nv</SUP></I> and Tm-2<I><SUP>a</SUP></I> showed no symptom and no virus was detected, however the plant showed necrotic symptom and TMV-T was detected when it was grafted onto the plant having no resistant gene. Other tomato plants in genotypes showed mosaic or fern leaf like symptom and TMV-T, CMV and/or TMV-O were detected. It is suggested that the tomato plant having Tm-2<I><SUP>a</SUP></I> gene was seemed to appear a necrotic symptom by the infection of TMV-T in greenhouse-cultivation.
