Multiparous female snow crabs Chionoecetes opilio without or with only a small brood (termed as "Konashi" or "Heriko" in fish markets) caught in the western part of the Sea of Japan were investigated in November - December 2005. Among the 404, 595 female snow crabs caught by bottom trawl, the frequency of crabs without or a small brood was 1.3%. Of the "Konashi" or "Heriko" crabs, the frequency of crabs that had a few or many brown-colored scars and epibionts on the carapace was 64.3%, and the frequency of crabs without a brood was 33.0%. For the crabs without a brood, the number of sperm remaining in a seminal receptacle tended to be few. As for the crabs without a brood and had many brown-colored scars and epibionts on the carapace and legs (regarded as aged crabs), the ovary weight index was low. But the primary factor of occurrence of female crabs without or a small brood was not clarified in this study.
