Using the method of DeLury, the initial population size (<I>N0</I>) of marine juvenile ayu (<I>Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis</I>) in the eastern coastal waters of Kii Channel was estimated as 376-4949 (×104) from 1991 to 2004. Annual estimations of the initial population size (<I>N0</I>) fluctuated widely, indicating that the stock is in an unstable condition. Exploitation rate (<I>C/N0</I>) ranged from 0.65 to 0.87, and was over 0.7 in most years. Significant positive correlations were found between the initial population size (<I>N0</I>) and total catch in number of individuals (<I>C</I>), as well as between the initial population size (<I>N0</I>) and remaining number of individuals (<I>N0-C</I>) . As the annual quantity of down-wept ayu larvae in the Hidaka River increased the following year's initial population size (<I>N0</I>) tended to increase. These results suggest that increasing the quantity of down-wept larvae and catch control of juveniles are effective to maintain stability of the stock.
