In the pen shell, Atrina (Servatrina) lischkeana, effects of hypoxia on ventilation and ciliary movement of the gills were examined at 20°C . The shell was ventilated by opening the inhalant orifice and the exhalant orifice intermittently under normoxic condition (intermittent type of ventilation) and by opening the orifices continuously below 60 mmHg in oxygen partial pressure (continuous type of ventilation) . The ventilation volume was 435 ml/min/kg under normoxic condition and increased to 1, 862-1, 888 ml/min/kg, 4.3 times greater than that of normoxia, at 38.7-54.9 mmHg, but remarkably decreased at 1.9mmHg and lower. The movement of a piece of vinyl film put on the gill surface showed the same speed at 14mmHg and higher, but remarkably decreased at 2.0 mmHg and lower. Based on these findings, it was concluded that the pen shell increased ventilation volume by changing ventilation from the intermittent type to the continuous type under hypoxic condition, but died of suffocation without ventilating a quantity of water necessary for oxygen uptake due to the decreased ciliary movement activity of the gills under severe hypoxia.
