Factors for Catch Fluctuations of Juvenile Ayu in the Eastern Coastal Waters Facing Kii Channel

Catches of marine juvenile ayu <I>Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis</I> in the coastal waters of Kui Channel, Wakayama Prefecture, fluctuate widely. Environmental factors for the catches in the past years have been examined by the multiple regression analysis. The variable selection according to the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) showed that the annual catches of the Juveniles are explained by the quantity of down-wept larvae in the last year in the Hidaka River (<I>X</I><SUB>1</SUB>), the catch of clupeoid Juveniles by the fishery from last October to last January (<I>X</I><SUB>2</SUB>), the wet weight of plankton biomass in last December (<I>X</I><SUB>3</SUB>), and the amount of precipitation in last October (<I>X</I><SUB>4</SUB>) . The following equation is proposed to obtain the forcast of catch (<I>Y</I>) based on these factors:<BR><I>Y</I>=2.898+0.321<I>X</I><SUB>1</SUB>-0.022<I>X</I><SUB>2</SUB>+5.970<I>X</I><SUB>3</SUB>+0.016<I>X</I><SUB>4</SUB> (<I>R</I><SUP>2</SUP>=6.837) .
