We reported here some biological notes on the albino amago salmon, Oncoyhynchus masou ishikawai. About thirty albinos were found among the yearling amago salmon reared at a commercial trout farm in Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan in January 1993. The eyed eggs from albino parents were introduced to our hatchery in November of the year and their offspring have been reared since then.
No pigment was observed in the eyes of embryo at the eyed egg stage, but the alevin had black eyes and a uniformly yellowish body. Comparison of morphometric characters showed no apparent difference between natural and albino amago salmon, except for body depth and body width. The albino grew well and attained sexual maturity at the age of two as same as the natural fish did. The mode of inheritance of the albinism in amago salmon was concluded to be recessive by the results of cross fertilization. The authors believe that this is the first report of the albino amago salmon.
