Estimation of the Growth Rate of Attached Algae and Algal Grazing Rate by Ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis in Two Rivers of Kochi.

Growth rates of attached microalgae and algal grazing rates by ayu, <I>Plecoglossus altivelis</I> were estimated in two rivers, mesotrophic Monobe River and oligotrophic Ioki River, in Kochi. Increases in chlorophyll a on the surface of "caged" rocks showed that algal growth rates were 0.39-0.77 (average 0.58) division/day in Monobe River and 0.25-0.56 (average 0.44) div./d in Ioki River. Grazing rates on attached algae by ayu, estimated by differences in the increase of chl.a between on "open" and "caged" rock surfaces, in Monobe River and Ioki River were 0.20-3.13 (average 1.1) and 0.08-0.38 (average 0.28) μg-Chl.a/cm<SUP>2</SUP>⋅d, respectively. Algal grazing rates by ayu had the positive relationship to the growth rates of attached algae, suggesting that the production of attached microalgae affected largely on the growth of ayu.
