Rockwool, a slag wool used as an artificial soil for plants, can be handled more easily than natural soil because of its lighter weight. The efficacy of rockwool in maintaining recirculating water quality in aquaria was observed under different experimental combinations of rockwool, the rock worm, <I>Marphysa sanguinea</I>, and the kuruma prawn, <I>Penaeus japonicas</I> for 8 days. The amount of released NH4+-N was low in aquaria with rockwool and very low with a combination of rockwool and the rock worm. Furthermore, the development of black-colored reduction zone was slower in the rockwool bed compared to natural sand bed. Thus, rockwool is useful in maintaining rearing water quality in good condition and particularly a good bed for rearing animals which burrow, drill, or embed in bottom sediments, such as the rock worm and the kuruma prawn.
