To investigate the effects of photoperiod and light intensity on gonad maturation, spawning and mating rate of the adult <I>Penaeus monodon</I>, two experiments were carried out from July to September in 1991.<BR>In experiment 1, the effects of the short (13 h light and 11 h dark, 13 L: 11 D) and long day lengths (15 L : 9 D, 17 L : 7 D) did not show a significant difference of the development of the gonad, spawning, rematuration, spawning times and molting cycle of the wild <I>P. monodon</I>, however, short day-lengthes tended to promote better mating rate probability than long day-lengths. Light intensity (2-5 lx, 20-25 lx) had no direct effect on either spawning rate or rematuration, but 2-5 lx may increase ovarian maturation and mating rate compared with 20-25 lx. In experiment 2, the photoperiod (1 L : 23 D, 12 L: 12 D, 23 L: 1 D) also did not effect the gonad maturation, spawning, rematuration, fecundity, molting cycle and survival rate, but the mating rate of the wild/pond-reared <I>P. monodon</I> showed a good result at 12 L: 12 D (natural day-length) .
