A laboratory culture study was made to examine the effects of effluence from sewage disposal plant on the growth of <I>Porphyra</I> sp. and four species of diatoms occcurred in the Noni cultivation ground. The culture media were prepared for the study in different concentrations (vol %) of effluence.<BR>The growth of conchospores and thalli of <I>Porphyra</I> sp. was slightly accelerated by addition of the effluence in concentrations from 0.3 to 10 %. Similar growth trend was observed in each species of the diatoms, although the growth of diatoms was more accelerated in comparison with <I>Porphyra</I> sp. The growth of both Porphyra sp. and diatoms was suppressed at exceptionally high concentration of effluence of 30 %. Such a poor growth was probably brougt about by an ingredient of effluence in the case of <I>Porphyra</I> sp., and by lowering of salinity in adding effluence in the case of diatoms.<BR>The effluence was unlikely to bring about directly the poor growth of <I>Porphyra</I> sp. in the cultivation ground. From the standpoint of aquaculture, it was notable that the effluence promoted growth of the attached diatoms which occurred in the ground and caused quality deterioration in the Noni cultivated.
