We studied about the effectors found in bone marrow supernatants (BM sup) of the involved joints in rheumatoid patients. Using autologous synovial cells, the effects of BM sup were investigated on synovial cells on synovial cell growth, total DNA and 3H-thymidine uptake. Based on the effects of BM sup on synovial cells <I>in vitro</I>, patients were classified into 3 groups.<BR>group I: BMsup had highly significant effects to induce the decrease of doubling time and the increase of total DNA and 3H-thymidine uptake.<BR>group II: BMsup had some significant effect induce the increase of 3H-thymidine uptake, but apparently no effect on doubling time and total DNA.<BR>group III: BMsup had slight but significant effect to induce increase of 3H-uptake. Although it also induced the cell death within 2 days. Significant titer of collagenase was identified.<BR>These effectors' balances were coincident to the pathological findinggs in each patient.
