The effects of PSF on PMN functions, such as O<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>-</SUP> generation, chemotaxis, adherence, enzyme release, were studied. The PSF, capable of stimulating the phagocytosis by PMNs, did not affect chemotaxis, adherence and enzyme release. Only O<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>-</SUP> generation from PMNs was significantly increased in the initial phase of phagocytosis, and this stimulation of O<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>-</SUP> generation was completely paralleled with the stimulation of phagocytosis by PSF. Resting PMNs hardly generated the O<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>-</SUP> by PSF treatment, suggesting that PSF does not affect the O<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>-</SUP> forming system directly. PSF did not affect the Fc receptor mediated phagocytosis, whereas PSF enhanced the ingestion phase, but not attachment phase, of C3b receptor mediated phagocytosis by PMNs, suggesting that PSF may modulate the C3b receptor function of PMNs specifically. PSF generated from guinea-pig PMNs enhanced the phagocytosis by rabbit PMNs, and rabbit PMN-produced PSF accelerated the phagocytosis by guinea-pig PMNs, indicating that PSF is not specific for animal species.
