Among Escherichia freundii there are strains with O antigenic structure 3, 10 or 3, 15 which is identical with that of group E Salmonellas.It has already been reported that group E2 and E3 Salmonellas possessing O antigen 15 produce phage ε15 responsible for the antigenic conversion 3, 10→3, 15 in group E cells and that O antigens of group E2 cells can be converted from 3, 15 to 3, 10 by exposure to anti-15 serum and from 3, 15 to 3, 15, 34 by infection with phage ε34 obtained from group E3 cells.In E. freuncii, however, somewhat different phenomena were observed. Thus, E. freundii 4598-53, even though possessing O antigens 3, 15, was found not to produce the phage ε15, and antigenic conversions by anti-15 serum and by the phage ε34 could not be demonstrated either.Among six strains of E. freundii possessing O antigens 3, 10 only one was found to be capable of being converted from 3, 10 to 3, 15 in the O antigenic structure by infection with the phage ε15. In this case, however, production of phage ε15 was easily demonstrated in some variant cells, while being very difficult in others. Antigenic structure of the variants reverted to the original one by cultivating the cells in broth containing anti-15 serum.
