The procedure of preoperative autologous blood donation and transfusion in our hospital was described. Without any troublesome, 800-1200ml of blood were collected and stored in its liquid form up to 3 weeks prior to scheduled surgery. All patients were prescribed an oral iron supplement (200mg/day). No significant decreasing of serum iron level after two or three donations was observed. Autologous blood was transfused in the patients with bleeding over 800ml. Homologous blood transfusion was performed in a patint with bleeding over 2200ml. After the employment of the autologous blood transfusion techniques, the blood volume of usual homologous transfusion was also decreased.
