A sample of red cells of a patient suffering from carcinomotous peritonitis was found to be incompatible with 9 of the 17 donors' plasmas in minor crossmatch tests. Direct antiglobulin test was negative. Moreover, the patient's red cells reacted with 72 of the 150 adult AB sera, while they failed to react with following lectins: Salvia horminum, Salvia sclarea turkestanica and Dolichos biflorus absorbed with A1 cells. After acetylation of the red cells, their reactivity with AB sera disappeared, but the A and B antigenicity did not vary. The results obtained strongly suggested that this group AB patient developed the acquired B antigen.
