The main purpose of this paper is to propose the new curriculum of geography education in elementary school. Geography has been considered to be taught mainly as a field of life environmental studies and social studies in Japan. During the first two years of elementary schooling, pupils study primary geography partly in life environmental studies. After the third grade they study it in social studies. In Japan, social studies are taught according to so called a expanding horizons type study theory. Neighboring areas are taught first and they are extended to towns and cities all over Japan. On the cotrary, learning areas far from home come later. In this paper the new geography curriculm is planned based on a theory of spiral type study. Upon the theory various areas not only in Japan but also in the world are taught in each grade in this curriculum. Pupils can obtain geographical knowledges including place names and skills gradually with intellectual curiosity.
