This study focuses on the sequence of population studies on geographical edncation, aiming at a contribution to the future curriculum restructuring. Two kinds of data sources are prepared for this study: one is the current national curriculum standards in Japan; and the other is the Japanese school textbooks authorized by the Minister of Education. Based on the results of this study, the hypothetical minimum essentials are summarized as follows:1. In the course of elementary school, it is important for children to appreciate static characteristics of population, especially on the spatial patterns of population distribution.2. For the lower secondary school students, the fundamental requirement is to apprehend the world and Japan, based on the areal difference of population number. In addition to that, they study dynamic characteristics of populaton, centered on population change and its cause of migration.3. The geographical way to look at the world is essential in the course of upper secondary school, where the temporal scale of considering population is extended and therefore the natural component of population change becomes to play an important role in the consideration. The consideration of areal difference is also essential in the study of population problems and population policy.
