Growth characteristics of <I>Scenedesmus quadricauda</I> were studied under various nutrient concentrations. Cultivation were carried at 27°C in a 14h light/10h dark cycle with coolwhite fluorescent lamps of 3, 000lux. The progresive removals of nitrogen and phosphorus in the medium were determined.<BR>In the nitrate culture media, nitrite was found during the algal growth. <I>S. quadricauda</I> preferred to utilize ammonium ion rather than nitrate ion. The pH of medium rapidly decreased with the growth on an ammonium containing media and the growth of <I>S. quadricauda</I> was inhibited at low pH.S.<I>quadricauda</I> required 6.8μg-at/<I>l</I> (0.095mg/<I>l</I>) of nitrogen, and 0.66μg-at/l (0.020mg/<I>l</I>) of phosphorus for 1mg/<I>l</I> of algal growth.
