IMMUNOLOGICAL STUDIES ON SCHISTOSOMIASIS JAPONICA:On artificial immunity

Immunization of animals with adultworm-and egg-antigen and passive immunization with antiserum were performed. With these animals, precipitin tests, change of serum protein and protection against reinfection were studied.<BR>I. protection against infection of S. japonicum was obtained in mice injected with adultworms-antigen but no protection was observed in mice immunized with eggs-antigen or immunized passively with antiserum.<BR>II. 2 antigens, prepared from adult-worms and eggs, gave positive results in precipitin test using immune sera of rabbits, immunized with adultworms-, eggs-antigen or immunized passively with antiserum.<BR>The highest precipitin titers of rabbits sera immunized with adultworm were 3, 200 X against adult test-antigen and 100 X against egg test-antigen. Sera from rabbits immunized with egg-antigen showed the highest precipitin titers of 800 X against adult test-antigen and 6, 400 X against egg test-antigen. Rabbits sera, immunized passively with antiserum of goats, gave positive reaction at 6, 400 fold dilution to adult or egg test-antigen.<BR>III. The change of serum protein in mice injected with suspension of adult-worms and eggs and antiserum from immunized goats was investigated by paper-electrophoresis. The serum protein of mice injected with suspension of adults showed remarkable increase of total protein slight increase in α-, β-globulin, increase in γ-globulin and remarkable decrease in A/G ratio. The serum protein of mice injected with suspension of eggs showed remarkable increase of total protein, slight increase in β-, γ-globulin and decrease in A/G ratio. Increase of total protein, slight increase in albumin and γ-globulin were observed in mice immunized passively with antiserum.
