Recently, modified rosin dispersed size is coming into wide use for office paper, because it is superior to conventional alkaline sizes (AKD, ASA) additions, in respect of reduction of stain on wet-end, maintenance of paper friction, PPC printability, and ink-jet printability.<BR>To improve retention of chemicals on wet-end, and to increase use of recycled paper with calcium carbonate, as a result, pH in wet-end is disposed to rise. The conventional rosin related sizes do not work sufficiently under the papermaking condition at pH of 5.5 to 7.<BR>We suggest the development of rosin ester sizes with sufficient effect under the present papermaking conditions and retention systems.
