The structure of cellulose in pulp fibers has been discussed. Some discrepancy was found in the process of the discussion. Scallan's model with respect to the microstructure of pulp fibers seems to have been accepted extensively. On the other hand, Salmen and Back have investigated on glass transition phenomena of cellulose molecules in pulpsheets at the presence of adsorbed water. Cellulose is required to possess so called free volume in its non-crystalline region in order to move freely in a long range. What is the non-crystalline region of cellulose in wood pulp fibers ? Microfibrils are recognized firmly to have string-like structures by the electron microscopic observations. Is it possible to expect a typical disordered "amorphous" region rather than a paracrystalline structure in microfibrils ? It is hard to derive that cellulose molecules in pulp fibers behave like thermoplastic polymers in regard to molecular motion under varying environment.<BR>If we consider that mechanical behavior of cellulose affected by adsorbed water is attributed to phenomena taking place in an interfibrillar (interlamella) region instead of in an intrafibrillar structure, the apparently conflicting results described above can be compensated well each other. In this context, the non-crystalline region of cellulose in pulp fibers should be on or near the surface of microfibrils. This seems to be one of the conceivable models for solving the problem. It is quite important to build up conception of the microstructure of pulp fibers, especially for the systematization of mechanical properties of paper.
