The introduction of hydrophilic groups into lignin has been investigated with a view to improving high yield pulp. Lignosulfonate (LSA) and thiolignin (TL) were irradiated by γ-ray (5 Mrad) with two vinyl monomers and four lower fatty acids in aqueous media. <BR>The results are summarized as follows : <BR>(1) The combinations of LSA and methacrylic acid or vinylsulfonic acid were observed by the methods of gel-filtration and paper electropholeisis. As a result, the weekly acidic group of LSA increased from 0.16 to 0.41 eq/OMe in the case of LSA-methacrylic acid, and the sulfonic acid group increased from 0.37 to 0.52 eq/OMe in the case of LSA-vinylsulfonic acid. <BR>(2) Weekly acidic group of LSA increased more effectively by acetic acid and propionic acid than by n -butyric acid and isobutyric acid. The tracer experiments showed that propionic acid and n-butyric acid combined with LSA more than acetic acid. <BR>(3) Methacrylic acid combined with TL in a small amount of 0.08 eq/C<SUB>6</SUB>-C<SUB>3</SUB>. <BR>(4) The amounts of [1-<SUP>14</SUP>C] fatty acids in TL decreases as follows, n -butyric acid>propionic acid>acetic acid.
