Bearing capacity of soft silty soil with high water content has been investigated by placing planar synthetic geonet layer inside a granular base to form the sandwich earth structure that overlies the soft soil. In addition the effect of cementing materials injecting into the granular base as well as the simple sandwich reinforcement system using thin sand mat have also been studied. Series of tests have been conducted on a small model box under plain strain condition subjected to static and cyclic loading. Test results reveal that: (1) Sand mat alone reduces the settlements, whose effect is mainly due to the spreading of the footing load in wider area over the soft soil. (2) Presence of geonet reinforcement layer within sand mat reduces the settlement further. This is due to reinforcement of geosynthetics. (3) Injection of cementing material also gives birth to improvement. This is brought by the Hybrid effect of combining mechanical stabilization with chemical stabilization. (4) It is therefore concluded that the advanced Hybrid system adopted in this study produces significant improvement in stiffness as well as in the bearing capacity of soft ground under both static and cyclic loading.
