A series of model shaking tests was performed under normal gravity on reinforced soil retaining wall with a full-height rigid facing and gravity type retaining wall. Both types of model walls were located on and backfilled with dense dry sand layers. They suffered lateral and overturning displacements and formation of failure plane in their unreinforced backfill. Based on the observed behavior, simplified procedures to evaluate the displacement of retaining walls in terms of its lateral and overturning components were proposed, while changing the computation methods before and after the formation of failure plane. Shear deformation of the reinforced backfill was considered in evaluating the overturning component of reinforced soil retaining wall. The proposed methods could reasonably simulate the model test results.
