When geomembranes are used in barrier system at waste disposal sites, it is necessary to install the protection layers such as nonwoven geotextiles. In this research, the relation between the puncture resistance and the protection performance was examined, and the protection guideline of the nonwoven mats applied to the waste disposal site at the sea was shown. Main conclusions derived from the experimental results are: (1) when the No. 2 crushed stone is used for an upper and lower ground, the nonwoven mat with the puncture resistance of 1.5kN or more is necessary, and (2) it is necessary to use the nonwoven mat of the puncture resistance of 1kN or more in the case with the No. 4 crushed stone or the converter slag.
