Improvement in the seismic stability of the whole of a bridge abutment part system, which includes a bridge abutment and backfill to level 2 earthquake motions like the 1995 Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake, is an important subject. The Japan Railway Construction Public Corporation, Railway Technical Research Institute, and University of Tokyo have done research and development about the bridge abutments of a rational new form of having seismic stability. As the result, the new type abutments with geogrid-reinforced cement-treated backfill were proposed. The lateral loading tests was carried out about the bridge abutment with the backfilled cement-treated soil built near the Kyushu Shinkansen Takada Tunnel entrance by setting it as the main purpose to check the seismic stability to level 2 earthquake motions. Consequently, it has checked that these bridge abutments had big intensity. Moreover, the modification mode of bridge abutments was fall mode, and was the same result as the modification mode designed and analyzed in advance.
