The structure of the drain with a cap (cap-drain) and its combination with vacuum pressure to consolidate the soft ground is explained. Numerical analyses are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of vacuum consolidation with cap-drain under the following conditions, namely, there is a thick high permeability (for both water and air) layer on the ground surface and there is a sand layer within clay layer. In case of a high permeability layer on the ground surface, due to air leakage in this layer, only with an air tighten sheet on the ground surface, vacuum consolidation can not be conducted. A cutoff wall around the area to be improved needs to be constructed and it is not economic. Using cap-drain is a relative economic method. In case of a sand layer within clay deposit, the vacuum pressure cannot be effectively applied to underlain clay layer. With cap-drain, the drain can be sealed on the part passing through the sand layer and the effect of vacuum consolidation can be improved. Base on numerical results, it is understood that combining the cap-drain and vacuum pressure is an effective and efficient soft ground improvement method.
