At the bend part of pipeline under the internal pressure, un-equilibrium force (the thrust force) occurs with the proportion to the magnitudes of the angle of the bend and internal pressure. Generally, this thrust force is supported by the passive soil pressure which affects background of bend. Especially, the concrete block of the shape which rolls bend is used, when the thrust force is large. However, the use of this heavy concrete block in the soft ground is not desirable, because the local settlement of pipeline occurs.In this paper, new thrust protecting methods using vertically installed geogrid were proposed. Lateral loading tests were carried out in the dry sand ground for model pipes having a 90mm diameter in order to clarify the effectiveness of these new thrust protecting methods using the geogrid. And, tests using a rectangle model, which simulated the concrete block, was also carried out in order to compare with present design method. Two types of dense condition and loose condition were used as backfill.As the results, it was found that these new methods were very effective as a thrust protecting method for lateral forces due to internal pressure. In addition, some considerations were carried out on the mechanism of the interaction of underground structure and backfill material by the DEM analyses.
