The reproducibility of a respiratory control system was quantitatively evaluated using the coefficient of variation (CV) of ventilatory parameters (tidal volume; VT, total respiratory cycle; Ttot, minutes ventilation; V1) and end-tidal PCO2 (PETCO2) calculated from respective values measured for periods of 2 minutes. In healthy male subjects, mean±SD values of CV of VT, Ttot and V1 were 12.5±6.3, 13.1±5.5 and 14.9±3.7%, respectively. In the future, these values will be available for evaluating abnormalities in the reproducibility of ventilation as seen in hyperventilation syndrome.Isocapnic hypoxia reduced the CV of ventilatory parameters, indicating that reproducibility of the respiratory control system was enhanced by the hypoxic stimulus. The possible mechanisms for increasing the reproducibility of ventilatory parmeters by hypoxic stimulus were discussed.
