A Case of Malignant Transformation in Lichen Planus of the Tongue

Several reports have said that carcinoma can rise from sites of oral lichen planus (OLP). However, most of these reports include clinically lichenoid lesions, and there are few reports about malignant transformation of OLP from the cases diagnosed by histological examination.The present case was a 59-year-old female with erosive OLP diagnosed histologically on the left side of the tongue. A topical steroid treatment was done, but the symptoms did not improve. Malignant transformation was found in the same region where the biopsy was performed 1 year after the initial histological examination. Interestingly, tumor suppressor gene product, p53 was abnormally expressed in both OLP sample and post-malignant transformation sample in this case.
