A Clinical Statistical Study on Oral Mucosal Lesions by Health Examination at Dokkyo University Hospital

A clinical statistical study on oral mucosal lesion by the WHO form was conducted using 1, 701 cases that underwent health examination at Dokkyo University Hospital from April 15th, 1996 to April 13th, 1998. The subjects were 1303 males and 398 females, and the most common age group was 40 to 59 years.As the specified disease, cancer, leukoplakia, lichen planus, recurrent aphthae, and pigmented areas were selected. There were 11 cases (0.65%) of leukoplakia, 5 cases (0.29%) of lichen planus, 23 cases (1.35%) of recurrent aphthae and 94 cases (5.53%) of pigmented areas. The most frequent site of each disease was gingiva for leukoplakia, buccal mucosa for lichen planus, and gingiva for pigmented area. However, recurrent aphthae was not recognized throughout the oral cavity.In this study, improvement of the consultation rate for precise examination after the examination and a sensitivity precision of the examination became subjects of discussion. It was considered that further revision of the examination method will be necessary.
