This study was conducted to investigate the usefulness of stellate ganglion radiation with linear polarized light (SGR) in the treatment of glossodynia. Eleven patients were treated with SGR (SGR group), and as a control treatment direct radiation with linear polarized light (Direct group) was performed in 12 cases. In the SGR group, the skin over the stellate ganglion was irradiated with polarized light, while those in the Direct group were irradiated directly on the tongue. After each treatment over a 4-week period, pain scores were evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS), the extent of pain, and difficulty in daily life. Using thermography, temperature changes in the tongue were measured after each treatment. The rate of VAS reduction in the SGR group was greater than that in the Direct group (68.3% and 50.0% respectively), but there was no difference in the extent of pain or difficulty in daily life. Temperature changes in the tongue showed significant large increase in the SGR group compared with the Direct group (+1.8°C and +0.6°C respectively; p<0.05). SGR appears to be an effective treatment for glossodynia. It was suggested that the release of pain with SGR was related to increase in tongue temperature.
