• We developed a contact oral mucoscope for magnified observation of the oral mucosa and visualized subtle patterns of mucous lesions and subsurface mucous structures that are not normally visible with the naked eye.The oral mucosa was initially observed with the naked eye, and then examined by oral mucoscopy using either the non-contact or the contact technique. In the latter procedure, the contact glass plate of the outer cannula comes in contact with the lesion via linkage fluid. The non-contact technique consists of magnifying the oral mucosa using the outer cannula without the contact glass plate.We visualized numerous morphological features of the oral mucosa using the contact mucoscope, except the anterior upper process palatally, and anterior lower alveolar process lingually.The results suggested that the contact mucoscope is a non-invasive, diagnostic tool that can visualize subtle clinical patterns of oral mucosal lesions and subsurface oral mucosa, which are not normally visible with the naked eye.
