Condition of displacement and torsion of the abomasum in suckling calves were studied. Many affected stukling calves showed clinical signs of anorexia, bloat, diarrhea or stopping of evacuation, abdominal pain and positive ping test. In case of left or right displacement of the abomasum, "Niveau pattern" was characteristic in the plain radiography. Affected calves with negative ping test showed torsion of the abomasum, the pattern of rotation was characteristic to the point that the long axis of the abomasum did not show any displacement and the rotation did occur around the axis. This pattern of rotation was named as "axis rotation of the abomasum". Incidence of the affected calf was 0.5% in dairy farm and 1.03% in fattening farm. It was revealed in 0-12 week-old calf was significantly higher than in 13-20 week-old calf. Morphological features and physiological indices were compaired with calves which had axis rotation of the abomasum and normal calves. Abomasal contrast radiography revealed occlusion of the omaso-abomasal canal and disturbance of evacuating gas. Abomasal emptying rate in term of aceto-aminophen excretion was accerelated, basal levels of plasma gastrin and CCK after fasting were extremely high and remained after ingestion of milk. These results suggested that underlying mechanisms for the occurrence of the abomasal displacement and rotation may relate to premature physiological functions and morphological stages of development of the abomasum. Non-surgical treatment was effective as surgical treatment.
